The Annual All-Virginia Choir event was a powerful weekend filled with music, connection, and inspiration. Held in conjunction with the All-Virginia Band and Orchestra event, this gathering brought together four outstanding honor choirs: the Middle School Treble Chorus, 8th Grade Mixed Chorus, High School Treble Chorus, and High School Mixed Chorus.

Each choir delivered breathtaking performances to full houses and standing ovations. It was a joy to witness such artistry and spirit from these young singers, many of whom are already emerging as the next generation of musical leaders.

All-VA Choir has always been about more than just the music. It’s a time for reconnection, reflection, and celebration. Over the three days, I had the opportunity to:

  • Reconnect with old friends and meet new colleagues

  • Chat with current and prospective VCUarts Music students and their families

  • Celebrate the incredible work of choir teachers from every corner of the state

  • Watch some of Virginia’s finest conductors and accompanists lead inspiring rehearsals

This year’s guest conductors—Evan Powers, Kari Adams, Jamie Hillman, and Brandon A. Boyd—were nothing short of phenomenal. I’m so grateful for their leadership, musicianship, and care for these students. It was an honor to observe their rehearsals and to thank each of them personally. Their energy and artistry elevated the entire experience for both students and fellow educators.

The middle school choirs were supported by two of RVA’s finest: David Kim and Daniel Stipe. It was a joy to see them in action, bringing such excellence and warmth to the rehearsal process.

One highlight of the weekend was Friday evening’s Share Concert, where each of the four choirs performed two pieces for each other. The concert was a beautiful celebration of community and student artistry. That same evening, I also had the opportunity to sing in the Directors’ Chorus for the first time, conducted by my friend and colleague, Dr. Meredith Bowen. Being part of that ensemble was a meaningful full-circle moment.

A huge thank-you to the Virginia Choral Directors Association and Virginia ACDA for their exceptional work organizing and coordinating this event. Your dedication to choral music and music education continues to shape lives and communities.

As I reflect on this amazing weekend, I’m filled with pride, gratitude, and excitement for the future of choral music in Virginia. The talent, passion, and commitment on display were truly something special, and a reminder of why we do what we do!
